Fabio-Coentrao

The Portuguese left back’s future with Real Madrid has been highly uncertain for several months now. He has been mentioned in a potential deal involving Gareth Bale and Tottenham. Most recently Spanish futebol journal ‘AS’ Noticias has linked him in a potential transfer back to Portugal, possibly to his old team Benfica.

Coentrao has struggled to live up to the expectation after his 30 million Euro transfer from Benfica which was always going to be difficult given the amount. He has only shown glimpses of what he can do with Real Madrid over the last season and a half. This year he has struggled with injuries. To be fair, Jose Mourinho has primarily used him as a stay-at-home defender rather than an attacker. And he’s performed well in that role.

Fans of Benfica and Portugal are very familar with his burst of speed, ability to run with the ball, offensive flair and great defensive instincts. He was one of the best performers for Portugal in both the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championships. Coentrao’s assist on Hugo Almeida’s goal in Portugal’s 7-0 thrashing of North Korea stands out as a particular highlight for me. It is my hope that Fabio goes somewhere where he could play his game and reach his full potential.
