Porto midfielder Joao Moutinho is one of the marquee commodities on the market this January. Tottenham Hotspurs missed out of the Portuguese international in the remaining hours of the summer transfer window. There are many theories about why the deal fell through but the Spurs remain the frontrunner to land Moutinho.

Spurs Manager Andre Villas-Boas managed Moutinho at Porto during the 2010-11 when the Dragaos won the Europa Cup and went undefeated in the Liga Portuguesa. Moutinho is a deep-lying playmaker-type, similar to Andrea Pirlo who could play anywhere in midfield.

Tottenham are currently holding down fourth place in the Premier League and have played well lately after a slow start to the campaign. Villas-Boas is reportedly desperate to pull the deal off in his first season in the London club. After being fired by Chelsea a year ago, many believe that Villas-Boas has a lot to prove. Moutinho is likely to make Tottenham far better.
