Portugal has for several years now, lacked a world-class striker on the national team. Since Azorean Pauleta retired from international play in 2006, the team has used Nuno Gomes, Liedson and even Cristiano Ronaldo in the role. All of which proved ultimately to be failures.

Currently, Portugal’s manager Paulo Bento has been calling up four striker: Hugo Almeida, Helder Postiga, Nelson Oliveira and of course Eder himself. Almeida is often inconsistent, has the reputation for missing a lot of chances and saw his quality dip with the national team after transferring to Turkey. Postiga has been Portugal’s choice under Bento and he has produced but his overall game is seen by many as lacking. 21-year-old Oliveira has great potential but needs more seasoning.

Eder has so far been capped four times and received his very first start for Portugal in a recent friendly against Gabon. He has shown with Sporting Braga that he could be the long sought-after striker that Portugal has lacked. Eder is quick with his feet, can pass and dribble past defenders. He provides so much more than Postiga can, drawing many to believe that he will be a regular starter with Portugal very soon.

In a recent Champions League game at Old Trafford, Eder demonstrated exactly what he could do by cleverly dancing around Michael Carrick to set up teammate Alan for Braga’s second goal.
