In a surprise move, Portuguese defender Daniel Carriço moved to Reading for the bargain basement price of 750,000 Euros. The 24-year-old has struggled with injuries this year and when healthy has more often been seen on the bench than in the starting line-up. Known as a versatile player, he could also play defensive midfield.

Carriço joins a club that currently stands 2nd from the bottom and in the relegation zone. Reading have given up 40 goals, only Aston Villa have conceded more this season. It is believed that Carriço will bolster their backend and hopefully help save them from relegation. Reading were promoted to the Premier League just this year.

Carriço spoke about leaving Sporting Lisbon with a heavy heart: “I have finished my time at Sporting, it was almost a lifetime. It is with great regret that I have to leave under such difficult circumstances, but I am confident that I will succeed.”
