Cristiano Ronaldo continued his recent strong form by scoring two goals in a decisive 5-0 defeat of the once mighty Valencia on Sunday. Fábio Coentrão started for Los Blancos as well.

Ricardo Costa played the full 90 minutes for Valencia, while Right-Back João Pereira did not play due to a red card suspension. With Barcelona’s defeat to Real Sociodad, Real Madrid still trail their archrivals by 15 points in La Liga. Valencia remain a disappointing 7th after 20 matches.

Domingos Paciência’s third game in charge of Deportivo La Coruña proved to be a difficult one. Facing Osasuna in Pamplona, the Galician club needed a win to help them leave the relegation zone.

But it was not to be. Deportivo went down 1-0 in the 26th minute after a goal by Sola. That was followed in the 61st minute when Nino scored to put the home side up. Deportivo’s Camuñas scored in injury time through a pass by Portugal international Pizzi for the consolation goal.

Pizzi, Zé Castro, Silvio, Bruno Gama and Andre Santos all started the game for the Spanish club. Nelson Oliveira game on for Santos in the 54th minute and missed two good chances late in the game.

Paciência admitted after the game that Oliveira has struggled to readjust after missing time with an injury.

“When things aren’t good and when you don’t play, confidence and effectiveness are often not what you would like. If you are not playing then you are not prepared to score goals,” Paciência said.

He added that he needs more from the team if they are to avoid relegation. “It’s not a good result, we came to win. The first half we played poorly,” he added. “We have to do better. We are responsible for this.”

Deportivo remain last in La Liga with only 16 points in 20 matches. However, they are only three points behind 17th place Celta de Vigo.

Elsewhere in Matchday 20, Simão Sabrosa and young Forward Rui Fonte started for Espanyol in an empressive 3-2 win against Mallorca. Simão opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Portuguese defender Jose Nunes started for Mallorca in the defeat.

Helder Postiga’s Real Zaragoza lost 2-0 to Real Valladolid. Sereno started and played the full match for Valladolid.

And Athletico Madrid beat Levante 2-0 to remain second in La Liga. Former international Tiago played the full match for the capital club.
