Sporting confirmed Friday that Argentine Left-Back Emiliano Insúa has left the club for Atlético de Madrid in a deal that will see the Leões receive a reported €3.5m.

Insúa’s departure had been rumoured for a few weeks, with most reports linking him to Brazilian club Grêmio. But reports surfaced Thursday that talks had broken down between the two clubs.

The 24-year-old signed a three and a half year deal with Atletico. The former Liverpool defender joins a club that currently stand second in La Liga.

He leaves a Sporting side that is right in the middle of a fire sale, having offloaded Elias, Gelson Fernandes, Marat Izmailov and Danijel Pranjić just this month alone.

Sporting President Godinho Lopes signed Portuguese defender Joãozinho on loan from this week from Beira-Mar to replace Insúa.
