A Bola is reporting that Benfica has signed former Arsenal and Sporting Lisbon youth player Rui Fonte to a 4 and a half year deal Monday.

The 22-year-old Fonte has been playing with Spanish club Espanyol since 2011 but failed to earn a permanent spot in the starting line-up. Last week, he was told by the La Liga club that his contract would not be renewed at the end of this season.

Fonte has been primarily a bench player this season for his Barcelona-based club, having played in 10 La Liga matches and earned 5 starts. He has yet to score a goal this season at the senior level.

But Fonte has always been a highly regarded prospect. He has played for Portugal at the junior level and currently enjoys an impressive scoring record with the U-21s, 9 goals in 20 matches.

Fonte is also a versatile attacker, having been utilized at the centre-forward position, as well as the wings. He is the younger brother of Southampton defender José Fonte.
