Serie A side Palermo has announced Monday that they have signed former Benfica defender Nélson to a permanent deal that will last until June 2015.

The deal costs the Serie A side nothing because Nelson’s contract with Real Betis expired at the end of last month. Nelson signed with Real Betis from Benfica in 2008.

A Bola is reporting that Nelson will be unveiled to the public in Sicily on Tuesday. He has played in 10 matches for the Seville-based club in La Liga this season.

The Cape Verdean-born Nelson had been previously linked with a move to Brazilian-side Vasco Da Gama. He joins a Palermo team that currently stand second last in Serie A.

Nelson is likely be counted on to inject some creativity into a Palermo club that has scored only 19 goals in 22 Serie A matches this season.

The 29-year-old has been capped by Portugal on 3 occasions.
