Midfielder André Gomes burst on to the scene last season with Benfica’s reserve squad in Portugal’s second division, demonstrating exceptional skill and technical ability.

His talent did not go unnoticed and he was soon selected for the main squad. Gomes would score a goal in his first ever appearance for the squad on October 27th, 2012 in a league match against Gil Vicente. He impressed manager Jorge Jesus enough last season to be selected to play in the Champions League on two occasions. And later the Europa League as well.

Portugal manager Paulo Bento selected the 19-year-old for a February 2013 friendly against Ecuador. However, he did not play in the match. Gomes played for Portugal at the U-20 World Cup this past summer.

In a December 2012 interview with O Jogo former Sporting left-back Paulo Torres described Gomes as a “cultured and modern player.”

Former Benfica midfielder João Alves also praised Gomes in an interview with Portuguese radio station Renascença in the same month.

“He is a complete player, a pivot, physically strong, aggressive and tactically good. He has all the characteristics to be a great player.”

So far this season, Gomes has seen his playing time with the main squad diminish. However, he has continued to produce with Benfica B in the second division.

During the January transfer window, Gomes was linked with a move to Manchester City, Liverpool and Monaco. His rights were sold to Meriton Capital Limited, an investment fund in Hong Kong for €15 million according to Renascença.
