Portuguese international striker Nélson Oliveira was unveiled to the public in France on Friday after agreeing to a one-year loan deal with Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais.

The 21-year old had also been linked with moves to the Premier League before signing with the French club. The striker said that manager Philippe Montanier, who was at La Liga club Real Sociedad last year played a big role in him coming to France.

“He [Montanier] called me several times and let me know that he wanted me, this played a very big part in my decision to come to Rennes,” Oliveira said.

Montanier did not hold back in praising the young player’s potential, stating that Oliveira is ‘very promising and a complete player.’ He added that Oliveira was ‘a priority’ during this summer’s transfer period.

Oliveira said that he was looking forward to playing with his new club. “The most important thing is helping Rennes win. I want to repay the confidence that the manager has in me. I hope to have a good season, score goals and be a good as I know I can be,” the young striker said.

Oliveira is hoping to rebound from a disappointing loan spell at Deportivo La Coruña last year where he scored only 4 goals in 30 matches.

The season ended in controversy, after scoring a late goal in Deportivo’s 2-0 win against Espanyol in May he celebrated by ‘hushing’ fans who appeared to be uttering insults. An incident that he later apologized for.

Oliveira has received 10 caps with Portugal, scoring a goal in an August 2012 friendly against Panama. He hopes to maintain his spot on Paulo Bento’s squad ahead of next year’s World Cup.
